NeuroCure
Clinical Research Center (NCRC)
There is a worldwide consensus that in modern medicine, and in particular in neuroscience, a major "road block" exists between bench and bedside. A number of countries have started structured initiatives to improve the translational process, mainly by implementing so-called "Clinical Research Centers" (CRC). Recently, it has been realized that CRCs can be highly effective if they are focussed on the specific requirements arising from the nature of specific diseases.
NeuroCure scientists have a long-standing expertise in this translational process: a number of discoveries from researchers of our consortium have been or are being tested in Phase II investigator-sponsored trials, or are being presently taken to Phase III clinical trials in collaboration with industrial partners.
Within NeuroCure, we have established a CRC ("NeuroCure Clinical Research Center", NCRC) which provides the infrastructure and services for both basic and clinical neuroscientists to swiftly establish proof-of-principle for a promising and robust laboratory finding in the clinical realm.
Similar structures are already operating successfully in the US, while several National Institute of Health programs are sponsoring general Clinical Research Centers and provide Clinical and Translational Science Awards.
However, to date in Germany, this concept is novel and will serve as a template for the establishment of similar CRCs devoted to translational medicine.
